Our showroom is frequently updated with our favourite accessory finds. Several years before the accession to the French throne of Louis XVI, we meet what is almost the exact opposite of the Rococo furniture of the preceding Louis XV age. Emphasis on straight lines and right angles, geometric forms, seriousness, logical design, and a sharp move away from the curves of the Rococo. Furniture becomes restrained in its form and decoration, with much use of fluted columns, carved friezes, oak and laurel leaf, wreaths, the Greek band, and other various neo classical attempts to imitate the furniture and architecture of the Romans and Greeks. Grey and White marble on natural woods that was painted grey or white, embellished with Gold Leaf was popular. During the reign of Louis Philippe, the color, grain, and quality of the wood became more a focus of design. Wood was painted in black, decorated with gilt with painted decoration, and sometimes veneered. Mahogany and palissandre were still employed while ebony and other darkened wood such as beech and pear tree came into use. Flood, sycamore, wild cherry, magnifying glass of elm, maple, root of if reddish, thuya were also common woods of the age. Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI are more popular in reproductions and adaptations have been placed on the market in increasing numbers.
