Situated in the lush and serene suburb of Irene, our club has a lot to offer. Originally established as a golf club in 1911, the Irene Country Club has since expanded to include a range of other sporting activities. The first Committee meeting, under the chairmanship of J.A. It appears therefore that the first nine holes were taken into use in 1912; the first hole being where the present twelfth hole is. The same year it was resolved to build two tennis courts near the present eleventh tee. General Smuts, after a few practice swings, pronounced the game of golf to be too mechanical for his taste. Bertie van der Byl, the club’s first chairman, played occasionally but was not very keen; he preferred to disturb the concentration of a player by whistling suddenly from some nearby point of concealment just as the ball was about to be hit! Our golf course has come a long way since its inception. The first hole of the original course is situated where the twelfth hole of the moderncourse is, invoking a sense of nostalgia in those who are aware of the clubs history. The course is open to amateurs and professionals alike. If you fall under the former category (or even the latter), our resident gold coach Owen Baker will help you improve your skills and knowledge of the Gentleman’s Game. Men’s drawn pairs or trips, depending upon numbers. We are privileged to have one of the most beautiful and tranquil settings in Pretoria. The club has 6 courts (3 under lights) and outstanding facilities (restaurant, halfway house, change rooms and conference facilities).We are highly competitive and actively participate in various levels of league. Wimbledon day (played in the winter on the cricket field to coincide with the real event) All members have access to the central club facilities. Members are issued with 2 magnetic-stripe cards where upon the one is used to make squash bookings and the other to purchase Food and Beverage at a 15% discount.
