What you should know about Valley Farm Animal Hospital

Animals in Pretoria, Food in Pretoria, Pets in Pretoria, Veterinary in Pretoria

Valley Farm is a 24 hour Animal Hospital. Both these doctors take referrals from other veterinary practices and are there to assist our own veterinarians with their patients when needed. Our team of ten veterinarians includes Dr. Hans van der Zee, specialist surgeon and Dr Liesel van der Merwe specialist physician. They are on hand to attend to emergencies and care for the hospitalised patients. For your peace of mind our hospital is staffed 24 hours a day, with a veterinarian, veterinary nurse and auxiliary staff on site at all times. At our well equipped facility we are able to offer you and your pets state of the art veterinary care as well as preventative health care such as vaccinations. For your convenience our vet shop, with a wide range of premium products for your dogs and cats is open until 10pm every night.

On weekends and public holidays we work on a first come, first served basis. All operations, dentistry and in-hospital treatments or tests (except emergencies) need to be pre-booked. We are staffed and equipped to handle a large variety of surgical cases, ranging from routine to advanced surgeries. Almost every pet will get sick at some point in their life; it could be a bout of gastro, heart failure or a hormonal imbalance. Many can be diagnosed and treated during a regular consultation with home care by the owner. At Valley Farm Animal Hospital we make a diagnosis before starting treatment, where possible, so we know what the prognosis will be and the treatment we give will be effective. Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese practice of inserting fine needles into the body at certain points. This is done to manipulate the flow of energy within the body to treat many physical and mental conditions. Veterinary Physiotherapy is a vital part of the management and recovery in many surgical cases such as spinal surgery, fracture repair and cruciate surgery. Pets are part of our family and we need to understand them, what motivates them, and realise what will make a happy healthy companion. Valley Farm Animal Hospital’s canine blood bank can supply the needs of our own hospital, and even a few other veterinary practices in the area. We are always looking for new donor dogs to join our team of lifesavers. Grooming of your pet plays an integral part in your pet's well been and health care. All types of coats, when washed and groomed make for happy pets and happy owners. Grooming of your pet plays an integral part in your pet’s wellbeing and health care. We recommend grooming starts at an early age, as this allows for the pet to be able to adjust to the situation and to make the whole grooming process enjoyable for both pet and pet owner. Experience of this has shown time and again how well pets handle this process when this process is followed. There are a number of breeds that will require professional grooming. This can be determined when checking for the breed which you and your family wish to make part of your home. We don’t recommend clipping of doubled coated dogs. We all live very busy lives and we are not always aware that there may be skin issues or injuries that have occurred. Your groomer is likely to find these and bring these matters to your attention. We work on an appointment basis, therefore ensuring that your pet will get the desired attention. Only after this examination will the doctor be able to give you an accurate estimate of costs. A dental scale and polish involves an examination of the mouth, with X-rays if necessary. An ultrasonic dental scaler is used to remove the scale and tartar from your pet’s teeth, in the same way human oral hygienists do. When all the cleaning and extraction work is complete, the teeth are polished with a high-speed dental polisher and special toothpaste. It is essential this is done as the ultrasonic scaler makes microscopic scratches in the tooth enamel which, if not polished out, will be an excellent place for food and bacteria to start to build up again. Older animals are often kept overnight to monitor their full recovery from the anaesthetic, and to ensure they are eating well prior to going home.
